【英語世界】優秀如忌廉 出彩似貓鬚
奶油，又稱忌廉cream，是奶類產品的一種，是牛奶中乳脂最高，最為濃縮的成分，會浮在生牛奶頂層，一般被視為品質最好的乳製品。所以cream一字在英文就比喻同類中最優良、最頂級的人或物。
說the cream of something，指的是某一類人物或事物中最頂尖、最優秀的一員。
The nominations are the cream of this year's films.
這些獲提名的都是今年電影作品中最傑出的。
法文有句常用的說法la crème de la crème，翻譯成英文就是the cream of the cream，近似the best of the best最好中之最好，用來強調某些人或物擁有最高的價值，最為珍貴。後來英文借用過來，成為the cream of the crop（農作物中的極品），可能是發音相近，亦可能早期農業是主要經濟活動，故此用了crop，但用語所指的已不單是品質最好的農作物，而是引申泛指同一類物品中最優良的品種，或者是一群人當中的菁英。
The singer is certainly the cream of the crop. People rush to buy tickets for her concerts.
那名歌星肯定是頂級的，人們搶着購買她的音樂會門票。
These fashion designers are the cream of the crop. They are recognized worldwide as leaders in the field.
這些時裝設計師是業內菁英翹楚，在全球公認為時裝業領導者。
中文說的菁英，是花，英文的花flower亦有相似意思，花是一株植物最吸引人的部分，因此說the flower of something也比喻作同類中最好的、最突出、最亮麗的。
This mobile phone is the most popular; it is no doubt the flower of all models.
這個流動電話是最流行的；毫無疑問是各型號中的首選。
由此而來的短語the flower of the flock（群眾中的菁英），亦帶有優勝、超越的意思，flock 是一群動物，如牛或羊，用flock可能是發音近似flower的緣故，但用語所指的當然不是動物中的表表者，而是其他各方面的出類拔萃的人或物。
His skills and achievements have made him the flower of the flock in tennis.
他的球技和成績令他成為網球界的王者。
They are selected because they are the flower of the flock in their respective fields.
他們獲得挑選，因為他們是在自己所屬業界的表表者。
要說菁英、極品，還有一些較為古老而有趣的說法，例如the cat's whiskers（貓鬚），the bee's knees（蜜蜂膝）。貓兒靠觸鬚感應四周，藉此靈活行走；而蜜蜂靠足部攜帶花粉，運送食物，它們都是最為有用的部位，象徵最重要、最出色的物品。這些原本是美國早期的俚語，由一些作家開玩笑、戲謔而創造，後來在英國亦多人運用，成為英文的用語，比喻一些頂尖、優秀、比別的都強、都好的人或物。
He is the cat's whiskers, founding a social media company and being one of the top 10 wealthiest at a young age.
他年紀輕輕便創立了一間社交媒體公司，成為十大富翁之一，是非常優秀的人才。
This restaurant is the bee's knees. You have to try it sometime.
這間餐廳堪稱美食之極致，改天你得去嘗嘗。
This magazine was once the bee's knees, of a high quality and well-received. Now it has gone out-of-date and may discontinue.
曾幾何時，這份雜誌是報業先驅，質素優良，社會一致好評，現在卻已落伍了，還可能停刊。
這些用語在一些輕鬆場合還是可以派上用場。語文很靈活，很多素材都源自日常生活，食物、植物、動物、昆蟲等等都是可以順手拈來的材料。以這些材料構成不同的用語，提供了不同的選擇。
